Woolworths deploys sniffer dogs as part of enhanced security measures
Woolworths has introduced K9 units at stores across South Africa as part of strengthened security measures following recent incidents involving explosive devices at two of its outlets.
Among the dogs deployed are Belgian Malinois, a breed widely recognised for its work in law enforcement, search-and-rescue operations and disaster response efforts around the world.
The retailer revealed the initiative on social media, sharing photographs of the dogs stationed at various stores and explaining that their presence is intended to help protect both employees and customers.
Woolworths confirmed through its media office that the K9 units form part of a broader security strategy implemented in response to the recent incidents.
The company said it could not disclose full details of the measures being taken, citing security considerations.
"As part of our heightened security response, we have undertaken a number of initiatives, one of which was the deployment of K9 units," the retailer said.
Woolworths added that the reaction from shoppers online had been positive, with many customers expressing appreciation for the increased security presence.
"Our priority is the safety of our people and our shoppers, and we'll continue to take every possible step to keep Woolworths secure," the company said.
