Makro expects consumers to take advantage of Heritage Month specials and bulk up on meat products

| Marketing and Promotions

Makro has positioned itself as the bulk shopping destination in its meat category for several years, appealing to both household shoppers and small business customers alike, due to the retailers’ focus on negotiating directly with the producers and locking in favourable bulk rates that enable it to maintain affordability.

“As these customers prepare for Heritage month, we have been looking closely at consumer food price inflation and putting measures in place to ensure our customers are not only getting quality meat products but at affordable prices too – a strategy we have been doing for a couple of years now,” explains Katherine Madley, Group Vice President of Marketing at Massmart.

“This forms part of our ‘Price Freeze’ approach on meat products which enables our customers to shop in bulk at affordable prices. We are therefore offering customers an average price of R79 per kilogram of meat, or R730 for 10 kilograms of meat, comprising beef mince, boerewors and pork braai chops during September.”

Makro has also consistently held its pricing against the following products for consecutive years, which include:

  • Bulk Lean Beef Mince at R79 per kg – the same price has remained for the last three years.
  • Bulk Beef Potjie Kos at R79 per kg – the same price has remained for the last two years.
  • Bulk Jacques Kallis Boerewors at R79 per kg – the same price has remained for the last two years.

The products Makro has selected for its price freeze* were chosen based on the popularity during September as customers often look for versatile cuts that are perfect for family gatherings and braais, which are integral to Heritage Month celebrations.

Makro customers consistently purchase these products in bulk, which not only saves them money but also allows them to stock up on quality meat products at affordable prices during a time when food costs remain higher than last year.

“By freezing the price on our meat products in this way, our customers can trust that even at the lower price points, they are getting top-tier quality meat products. Makro continuously streamlines its processes, cutting unnecessary costs and focuses on delivering value through bulk packaging, which reduces waste and adds to the retailer’s price advantage.

“This is supported by Makro’s policy to have independent audits done regularly in all stores that ensures product quality and top-class food safety standards,” adds Madley.

Buying meat products in bulk has a number of benefits:

  • Flexible consumption – Purchasing in bulk not only reduces the price per kilogram but also allows customers to freeze portions for later, allowing for flexibility in how much is consumed at a time. After choosing the type of cut, portion, vacuum seal or cling-wrap and freeze the meat for later use.
  • Versatile cuts– Products like Beef Mince or Potjiekos cuts are often more affordable when purchased in bulk and can be slow-cooked or stewed to yield larger portions, maximising servings per kilogram.
  • Seasonal deals– Seasonal promotions, in addition to bulk purchases, are often available during peak periods like Heritage Month.

Furthermore, Makro is being recognised as a meat product destination. Madley explains, “We recently held a trolley dash in our stores as part of our Birthday promotion where customers could get as much food or pantry items into their trolleys in a limited time.

“They focused on essential meat products such as chicken portions, beef and other pantry products. Makro’s bulk meat offering therefore proved popular among customers who trust Makro as a quality meat destination.”
