Checkers became the first supermarket retailer to introduce Black Friday in South Africa in 2014, with Shoprite following suit three years later. Aimed at providing cash-strapped consumers with much-needed savings ahead of the festive season, the promotion has since evolved into a nationwide retail bonanza.
