Two loyalty programmes, double the value – Pick n Pay’s burger Friday delivers for customers

Pick n Pay and FNB’s Burger Friday has set a new benchmark for customer and loyalty rewards with its discounted Burger Friday deal.

The collaboration between two of South Africa’s leading loyalty programmes - Smart Shopper and eBucks - is delivering double the value to customers by combining their benefits. It also forms part of Pick n Pay’s broader commitment to launching more value-focused deals to help South Africans stretch their budgets.

“This is a powerful demonstration of how South Africa’s favourite loyalty programmes are partnering to stretch household budgets further. Burger Friday very quickly became a weekly ritual for many families thanks to its unbeatable value,” says Peter Arnold, Executive: Commercial Fresh at Pick n Pay.

The burger deal includes four fresh buns, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a choice of four burger patties – beef, chicken, or vegetarian - offering a complete meal solution. Using impressive data innovation, customers simply have to swipe their Smart Shopper card and pay with their FNB card to access the massive discount. FNB, Smart Shopper customers pay just R60 instead of the regular R150. Non-FNB Smart Shopper customers also receive unbeatable value at R110.

This breakthrough deal followed shortly after Pick n Pay became FNB’s primary eBucks grocery partner on 1 April, giving customers up to 30% back in eBucks. Launched on 4 April 2025, the deal has attracted thousands of shoppers across all income segments to Pick n Pay stores nationwide. FNB saw an increase in customer sign-ups, while Smart Shopper sign-ups grew by over 50% year-on-year, as customers want to capitalise on the savings.

Burger Friday was just the start of many value-driven initiatives, says Arnold. “Seeing the massive appetite for great-value combo meals like Burger Friday, we’ve launched a range of everyday deals to help customers save on family favourites, and the results show how these are also a hit across South Africa,” says Arnold.

From Thursday to Sunday, Smart Shoppers pay R100 for two large pizzas. Customers have bought 400% more pizzas in the past month due to the deal’s savings. The Bombsquad Boerie Saturday – with the stamp of approval from rugby legends Stephen Kisthoff and Malcom Marx – see Pick n Pay Smart Shopper customers pay just R70 for a six-pack Bombsquad wors and six hotdog rolls.

Pick n Pay is also tackling the cost of protein with its popular Sunday Chicken Special – two whole rotisserie chickens, and alongside this, Meat Cut Tuesdays offer bulk meat deals to help households stock up and stretch their budgets even further.

“We’re reshaping the weekly shop into something customers can look forward to – convenient, affordable meal solutions every day, at prices they can trust,” concludes Arnold.
