This innovative cap design aligns with the European Union’s Directive 2019/904, which required that by July 2024, the tethered cap is implemented on all beverage bottles with a capacity of three litres or less. The directive aims to reduce plastic waste, improve recycling rates and keep plastic out of the environment.

A Step Forward in Environmental Responsibility

The introduction of the tethered cap is more than just a design innovation – it represents aQuellé’s commitment to minimising its environmental footprint. Unlike traditional bottle caps that can detach from the bottle and end up as litter, tethered caps stay connected to the bottle. This simple but effective measure makes the caps easier to recycle and helps to prevent plastic pollution. The connected cap also ensures that the inside of the bottle stays cleaner, which makes the recycling process more efficient.

Exclusive Availability with Shoprite Checkers Group

aQuellé’s tethered cap bottles are available exclusively at Checkers and Shoprite stores across South Africa, thanks to a partnership with the Shoprite Group, the largest FMCG retailer on the continent. By choosing aQuellé’s tethered cap bottles, shoppers are supporting sustainable practices and contributing to reduced plastic waste.

Seamless Integration into the Production Process

One of the most significant advantages of implementing aQuellé’s tethered cap bottles is that they require minimal changes to the production process. The new caps are very similar to conventional caps in size and application, which entails that only minor adjustments were needed to implement the new design. This ease of integration is an encouragement to other beverage producers to follow their example and take steps towards protecting the environment. It demonstrates how small changes can make a big difference.

Water Bottled in Its Natural Purity

aQuellé’s water is sourced from natural underground sources and bottled in its purest form. The brand adheres to the stringent standards of the South African National Bottled Water Association (SANBWA), ensuring that each bottle is held to the highest quality standards. The mineral composition of the water is not changed during the bottling process, so consumers can enjoy water in its original purity.

A Broader Commitment to Community and Sustainability

aQuellé’s commitment extends beyond the water it bottles. The company is committed to supporting and uplifting communities and creating sustainable jobs. From disaster relief and cleanup initiatives to a wide range of sports sponsorships, aQuellé is dedicated to improving lives throughout South Africa. The introduction of the tethered cap is a natural extension of this mission, making it easier for consumers to make environmentally friendly choices.
