Gauteng-based Premier Group Limited has a rich history dating back 200 years ago. In 2012, Premier began strategically repositioning itself as a leading consumer packaged goods (CPG) player by expanding from traditional milling and baking into a broader portfolio of product categories including sugar confectionery and home and personal care brands.

Premier has operations and distribution facilities throughout South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and eSwatini, and a home and personal care sales office in the United Kingdom. Premier exports into markets within the broader SADC region, the Middle East, the United States, Ireland and other EU markets.  In March 2023, Premier re-listed on the JSE.

Premier has Millbake operations and distribution facilities throughout South Africa, Lesotho and eSwatini. The coastal regions have been a strong focus for Premier’s success, and the business is now on a path to expand its market share further. Premier operates 13 bakeries, 7 wheat mills and 3 maize mills, with an installed baking capacity of 835 million loaves p.a., a milling capacity of approximately 1m tonnes of wheat and approximately 680 000 tonnes of maize p.a, Premier operates 30 owned manufacturing sites and 28 distribution depots, spanning South Africa, eSwatini, Lesotho and Mozambique. These sites are certified and accredited by recognised authorities to ensure food safety and to protect the health and safety of employees.

The Groceries and International business includes a portfolio of sugar confectionery, home and personal care products (HPC) and an extensive portfolio of grocery products manufactured in Mozambique.  Two sugar confectionery manufacturing sites in South Africa produce a wide range of sugar confectionery products. The HPC business has one manufacturing site operating in South Africa and a sales office in the United Kingdom. Premier also operates a diversified milling, pasta and animal feeds manufacturing business in Mozambique. The Groceries and International business exports into markets within the broader SADC region, the Middle East, Ireland, the United States of America and other European Union markets through established distribution partners. Premier also imports products from China, Taiwan, India and Europe under its own brands, to offer consumers a wider range of branded products to meet their specific requirements.

Premier’s iconic South African brands include Snowflake, Blue Ribbon, BB Bakeries, Star, Mister Bread, Iwisa, Nyala, Super Sun, Invicta, Impala, Manhattan, Super C, Mister Sweet, Champion toffee, Rascals, Candy Tops, Frutus, Lil-lets , Vulco and Dove cotton wool; as well as leading brands in Mozambique such as CIM, Florbela, Favorito, Polana, Top Score, Celeste, Dourado and Sunblest; and in eSwatini which include SUB, Iwisa, Bakers Pride and Ligugu and Mandla Mageu.

Premier distributes its brands to the retail, informal, convenience, ecommerce, and industrial segments via strategically situated distribution centres using a fleet of owned and third party vehicles.  One of Premier’s key strengths is its route to market capability with a bakery fleet of over 1 300 vehicles, delivering bread products to approximately 50 000 customers, 363 days a year.  For the balance of the product portfolio, Premier distributes its milling, sugar confectionery and HPC brands to the retail, informal, convenience, ecommerce, and industrial sales channels through distribution centres and its fully owned fleet. Premier’s contracted sales and merchandising service providers call on 5 400 stores daily to ensure Premier’s products are visible and available for consumers to purchase.

In line with its purpose that its people and products make a difference in the everyday lives of its consumers, Premier is committed to producing and distributing quality products that meet the needs of society. The group has an annual turnover of R19,9 billion and employs more than 8 600 people under stewardship of CEO Kobus Gertenbach.
