FSC launches AI-powered WhatsApp ordering in a foodservice industry first

The new ordering experience lets chefs and kitchen managers place routine orders by text or voice note, directly from the kitchen.

Food Service Company (FSC) has launched what it believes is a first for South African foodservice distribution: an AI-powered ordering experience built into WhatsApp.

Instead of pausing service to complete forms or navigate a conventional online store, a chef or kitchen manager can send FSC an order by text or voice note while checking the fridge, freezer or pantry. The system interprets the request, structures the order and sends it back for confirmation before checkout.

Ordering designed around the kitchen

The service is intended to reduce the friction of routine replenishment without removing human support. Customers can still speak to the FSC team, use the company’s online platform or place orders through their usual sales contact.

“Professional kitchens move quickly, and ordering often happens while chefs are doing three other things,” says Kevin Maier, Co-Managing Director of FSC. “WhatsApp and voice notes are already part of how our customers work. We have simply turned that familiar behaviour into a faster, more structured ordering process.”

Technology that strengthens personal service

FSC partnered with Stubber and Linx Systems to develop the ordering experience. Stubber builds AI employees that automate customer interactions and business processes across channels including WhatsApp, while Linx Systems provides the sales, warehouse and logistics technology that connects orders to FSC’s operational workflow.

The launch forms part of FSC’s wider investment in easier digital ordering, improved route planning and dependable delivery. The objective is not technology for its own sake, but a practical tool that saves customers time and helps FSC process orders more accurately.

Launching during FSC’s August birthday campaign

The WhatsApp launch coincides with FSC’s August birthday promotion, which includes a 12-page catalogue of foodservice value and a customer party-pack initiative supported by supplier partners.

Selected chefs are receiving packs containing product samples and a product guide, giving them an easy way to trial items in their own kitchens before adding them to future orders. The campaign brings together FSC’s core strengths: customer value, supplier collaboration and simpler ways to buy.

“It is our birthday, but our customers get the gifts,” says Maier. “The promotion gives customers immediate value, while the WhatsApp launch changes how easily they will be able to order from us going forward.”

A full-basket foodservice partner

FSC is a South African B2B foodservice supplier serving independent and multi-site restaurants, hotels, caterers, canteens, schools and other professional kitchens across Johannesburg, Pretoria, the Vaal and North West.

The company supplies close to 600 active business customers and offers more than 2,000 products. Its range includes seafood, poultry, dry goods, frozen products, dairy, bakery, beverages, packaging, cleaning products and other kitchen essentials, supported by personal service and temperature-controlled delivery.
