#WorldWaterDay2026: Massmart’s water conservation initiative prevents the loss of 45 million litres of water

| News

As we observe World Water Day, Massmart is celebrating the water and cost savings that it has realised through its water conservation efforts. Since the start of 2025, the retail group has managed to save approximately 18 million litres of water through the use of ultrasonic water meters, which enable rapid detection of water leaks at monitored sites.

This has been the continuation of a longer-term initiative and since the introduction of these water meters in 2022, Massmart has now prevented the loss of approximately 48 million litres of water through the presence of these meters in a quarter of its facilities. This year, the group intends to roll the metres out further across its portfolio of stores.

Commenting on Massmart’s continued focus on its water saving initiatives, Nicole Atcheson, Environmental Sustainability Manager said, “The loss of drinkable water in our already water-scarce country is a highly prevalent challenge which we are motivated to do our part to conserve. It has been noted, for example, that for every four litres provided to Gauteng by Rand Water, one litre is wasted through leakage, and so it is challenges such as these which make this a  priority for us.”

Other water saving initiatives that have been implemented by Massmart include rainwater harvesting, refrigeration condensate harvesting and the use of leakless toilet valves that prevent water-loss during leaks.
