Dis-Chem enters new leadership era as founder Ivan Saltzman retires as chairman
Dis-Chem Pharmacies has reached a major leadership milestone with founder Ivan Saltzman stepping down as chairman, paving the way for the retailer's next stage of growth under Chief Executive Officer Rui Morais.
Saltzman established Dis-Chem in 1978, transforming a single pharmacy into one of South Africa's leading health and beauty retailers, now valued at approximately US$1.7 billion. Although he has scaled back his day-to-day involvement, the Saltzman family remains a significant shareholder, holding more than 25% of the company.
Under Morais' leadership, Dis-Chem is broadening its integrated healthcare strategy through the rollout of its Health Hub model. The concept combines traditional pharmacy services with clinics, diagnostic testing, telehealth solutions and health insurance, while the retailer continues to strengthen its beauty, cosmetics and personal care business.
The leadership handover forms part of Dis-Chem's wider succession and governance strategy, designed to support sustainable long-term growth as the company evolves beyond its founder-led roots.
Saltzman's retirement as chairman marks an important step in the retailer's transition to a more institutional management structure, positioning one of Africa's largest health and beauty groups for its next phase of expansion.
