Dis-Chem closes another chapter in founding family succession

| On the move

Saul Saltzman, son of Dis-Chem founders Ivan and Lynette Saltzman, has stepped down from the retailer’s board, adding to a series of leadership changes at the JSE-listed healthcare group.

Dis-Chem announced that Saul Saltzman has resigned as a non-executive director, with his departure taking effect on 17 July 2026.

His latest resignation follows an earlier decision to step down as an executive director on 27 February 2026, ending a 19-year tenure in that role.

The board thanked Saul for his long-standing contribution to the company, acknowledging his commitment and years of service.

His exit comes amid broader changes within the retailer’s leadership and founding family involvement.

Ivan Saltzman resigned as an executive director on 30 June 2026, although he remains a member of the Dis-Chem board. He had already stepped down as chief executive in 2023, when former chief financial officer Rui Morais took over the top role.

Lynette Saltzman also left her executive director position in 2022 in order to focus on an operational role within Dis-Chem’s beauty division.

The family’s involvement has also shifted on the shareholder side. In June 2025, brothers Dan and Mark Saltzman inherited company shares worth billions as part of a broader restructuring of the family’s wealth.

Between January and February this year, Dan and Mark sold shares valued at approximately R320 million.

Despite Mark Saltzman’s significant shareholding, Dis-Chem has previously distanced itself from him following now-deleted social media posts that led to allegations of racism and sexism.

The Saltzman family remains among South Africa’s wealthiest families, with Bloomberg estimating their fortune at about US$1.3 billion.

The leadership changes extend beyond the founding family. Stanley Goetsch, who had been with Dis-Chem for 42 years, also retired as an executive director on 30 June 2026.
