A passionate group of individuals has come together to form the Boiphihlelo Food and Security Primary Cooperative, located at the heart of Southgate Mall, Gauteng.

Driven by their keen interest in agriculture and a commitment to food security in their community, a transformative food garden project has been launched. With a dual focus on income generation and creating employment opportunities, Boiphihlelo Co-operative is turning an urban space into a flourishing agricultural hub. Through their shared vision, they aim to foster sustainable growth, empower the community, and contribute to a food-secure future for all. The next phase looks to educate young people on food production to improve livelihoods and create young farmers in the area.

CSI and sustainability at the pinnacle of development

Behind the project stands a dynamic collaboration between Southgate Mall and Value Market and Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), whose joint efforts have paved the way for this groundbreaking food garden initiative. Southgate Mall and Value Market, known for its community-centred approach, has provided funding and a crucial urban space for the project, while FTFA has brought its decades of expertise in sustainable agriculture and community greening. Together, they are driving agricultural advancement in an urban setting, showcasing innovative methods that not only redefine urban farming but also set a new standard for how commercial spaces can contribute to food security. This partnership marks a bold step towards integrating sustainability with commerce, creating a model of how urban landscapes can become hubs for agricultural growth and community empowerment.

Practical Steps Toward a Sustainable Urban Agricultural Hub

The practical implementation of the Boiphihlelo Co-operative food garden project began with an agricultural training workshop in April 2024, where garden members were introduced to essential agroecology principles. This foundation in sustainable agricultural practices, paired with the momentum generated through three subsequent workshops, highlights the critical role of education and collaboration in fostering long-term development. By July, significant progress was made, with the installation of an electricity connection and the completion of irrigation, bed preparation, herb cultivation, and a borehole, ensuring access to water.
