Engen Partners with BVAPD to ignite new opportunities for Persons with Disabilities

| Social Responsibility

Engen has reaffirmed its commitment to the Breede Valley Association for Persons with Disabilities (BVAPD) as part of a three-year partnership aimed at empowering persons with disabilities.

Over the past two years, the partnership has shown great success through the WEMove project, with exciting plans for 2024-2025, including the introduction of the Jobcoach initiative.

Based in the Western Cape, BVAPD is a non-profit organisation that offers therapeutic, social, and community development services to individuals with disabilities in Worcester, Rawsonville, De Doorns, Touws River, and surrounding areas. Engen’s support prioritises the inclusion of persons with disabilities, aiming to create sustainable value and opportunities for all.

WEMove Successes: A Catalyst for Change

Since the WEMove project began in 2022, it has transformed the lives of participants. The project focuses on upskilling individuals with disabilities and providing them with the tools to achieve independence and integrate into the community.

"We have been thrilled with the success of the WEMove programme," said Anelda Rabie from BVAPD. “To date, we have placed 13 beneficiaries in various local businesses, including a major grocery chain, panel beaters, a crèche, and a bike shop. Two of these individuals were offered permanent positions, which is a testament to the impact of this programme.”

WEMove’s unique approach of categorising participants into “Moving Out” and “Moving Forward” groups has allowed higher-functioning individuals to be placed in the open labour market, while others continue to receive developmental support.

Looking Ahead: The Jobcoach Initiative

Building on the success of WEMove, BVAPD will introduce a Jobcoach initiative in 2024-2025. This new support structure will provide ongoing guidance to beneficiaries who are placed in jobs, ensuring that they are equipped to overcome challenges in the workplace.

“The Jobcoach will play a pivotal role in checking in on the well-being of beneficiaries and assisting with logistics and interventions where necessary,” explained Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager. “This additional layer of support will empower participants even further, ensuring their transition into the workforce is smooth and sustainable.”

The 2024 plans also include more corporate sensitisation training and new placements for beneficiaries, with the first group of 24 new participants already undergoing functional assessments.

Engen’s Commitment to Inclusion

Engen’s commitment to disability inclusion aligns with its support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 4 – Quality Education and SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth. By investing in these initiatives, Engen continues to drive meaningful impact and contribute to an inclusive and equitable society.

“Together with BVAPD, we are forging an inclusive future for all,” Mdabula concluded.
