Engen has proudly celebrated the success of 25 graduates from the inaugural Engen Global Citizen Development Programme (EGCDP) at a special awards ceremony on December 9^th at the Blue Roof Life Space in Wentworth, Durban.

The graduates, who reside in the South Durban suburbs of Umlazi, Wentworth, Lamontville, and Merebank, have successfully completed their National Certificates in Information Technology (Systems Development) NQF Level 5.

The 12-month course included a balanced mix of 30% theory and 70% practical training, with learners spending the first three months in the classroom and the remaining nine months gaining real-world experience at various workplace sites. This allowed participants to develop technical skills in Information Technology and interpersonal business skills, making them well-rounded candidates for entry-level roles in the ICT industry or for further study in the field of Computer Science.

Engen’s skills development and learnership programme is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to empowering youth and supporting local communities by offering accredited qualifications and hands-on learning experiences aimed at enhancing career prospects.

The Engen Global Citizen Development Programme, which was launched in April 2023 with 100 beneficiaries, is a collaborative initiative by the Community-Engen Joint Committee, comprising artisan training, learnership opportunities, accredited qualifications, and Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET).

Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager, expressed her pride in the programme’s success, noting: "We are extremely proud of all the graduates and are excited to announce that due to the success of the programme and its profound impact, we will continue the programme in 2025 in South Durban and expand to other regions.

"The EGCDP is more than just a training initiative; it’s about transforming lives. By equipping participants with valuable practical skills, we are enhancing their future job prospects and contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of our community."

Simlindele Manqina, Engen’s Head of Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement, also praised the graduates’ achievements, adding: “We are passionate about upskilling and empowering youth and unemployed individuals. EGCDP provides a springboard towards a brighter future by teaching skills that can be used throughout life—whether as employees or entrepreneurs. This initiative aligns with Engen’s mission to contribute to the broader economy and support South Africa’s youth in their journey to success.”

The EGCDP is part of Engen's broader commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4 – Quality Education, and SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth. By providing youth with opportunities for quality education, practical experience, and career development, Engen is contributing to a more inclusive, sustainable future for all.
