The Engen Maths and Science Schools 2024 matric class in Port Elizabeth, East London, and Cala achieved flying colours.

Engen celebrated the effort and sacrifice of the top learners in the Eastern Cape at awards ceremonies held on Saturday, 1 February, at Kariega Uitenhage Town Hall, Lumko Secondary School in East London, and Khanyisa Special School in Cala.

The EMSS programme, which provides extra tuition in critical “gateway” subjects like Mathematics, English, and Physical Science, to grades 10 - 12, continues to empower learners to excel academically and access opportunities in STEM fields.

Spotlight on Top Achievers

Among this year’s top achievers is Inam Tonono from KwaMagxaki High School. Inam achieved five distinctions, including an impressive 84% in Mathematics. Her exceptional performance has earned her acceptance to study Actuarial Science at the University of the Free State. Her advice to this year’s learners is simple yet powerful: “You need to stay motivated and remind yourself of your goals. Stay organised, practise consistently, and focus on improving your weak areas. Most importantly, take care of your mental health.”

Sandinathi Mkhize from Cala achieved five distinctions, including 88% for Mathematics, and is set to pursue her dream of studying medicine at Walter Sisulu University. The 18-year-old, who joined the EMSS Cala programme in Grade 10, credits the free Saturday classes with helping her excel in her studies. Sandinathi offers this advice to the Class of 2025: “When doing something that will change your life, do it with focus and passion. Work hard, believe in yourself even when the journey feels tough, and use every resource available to you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, consistency is key.”

Liphe Matyila from Nyameko High School in Mdantsane also achieved five distinctions, including 86% in Mathematics and 83% in Physical Science. Her exceptional performance has earned her acceptance to study electrical engineering at the University of Johannesburg.

Another standout learner is Odwa Leon Cele from Sophathisana Senior Secondary School, who achieved five distinctions, including 82% in English. Odwa plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Physics or Chemical Engineering at North-West University.

Kuluyolo Mbasa Jimana from Tsholomnqa High School earned three distinctions, including 80% in English, and dreams of becoming a commercial pilot, inspired by her love for technology.

Lesedi Lucas, who attended the EMSS Centre in Nelson Mandela Bay, achieved 85% in English, 79% for Mathematics, and 80% for Physical Science.

Empowering South Africa’s Future

The EMSS programme, running for over 35 years, offers free supplementary education to 1,500 learners annually at 10 centres nationwide. These centres are in the Eastern Cape (x3), Cape Town (x2), Johannesburg (x1), and KwaZulu-Natal (x4), providing learners from underserved communities with the tools to excel in STEM careers.

Engen will host awards ceremonies throughout February to honour the top performers at its EMSS centres nationwide.
