Checkers takes up sought-after grocery retail space in Hyde Park

| Store Openings

Customers can look forward to a world-class shopping destination with the opening of a new Checkers FreshX supermarket, Checkers LiquorShop and Petshop Science at Hyde Park Corner shopping centre in July 2025.

This follows last week’s announcement that Checkers is South Africa’s strongest brand according to the Brand Finance 2025 South Africa Top 100 Report.

With an easy-to-navigate layout, Checkers Hyde Park promises an elevated customer experience, offering features such as an in-store Kauai and Krispy Kreme. Other specialist service departments will include:

  • A Meat Market with free range chicken and restaurant-quality steak;
  • A bakery with artisan breads and cakes;
  • Health and Wellness;
  • A wine cellar;
  • A sushi bar;
  • Fresh fruit, vegetables;
  • Hot and cold foods deli; and
  • Money Market counter.

Customers will be able to find a wide assortment of local and international wines, craft beers, a variety of spirits, barware as well as an exclusive House of Fine Whisky selection in the Checkers LiquorShop.

The new Petshop Science store will offer everything four-legged companions could want and need at supermarket prices; including premium pet food, treats, toys, and veterinary-approved essentials from renowned local and international brands such as Hills, Montego, Dog’s Life, Eukanuba, Ultra Dog, Royal Canin, Rogz, Nandoe and Small Batches.

Driven by customers' growing demand for access to a convenient and premium shopping experience at supermarket prices, there are now 144 Checkers FreshX stores across the country (approximately 40% of the Checkers store footprint), with plans to continue upgrading more supermarkets to this format.
