SPAR’s ‘New Look’ SaveMor: A bold step in tackling South Africa’s affordability crisis

| Store Openings

The SPAR Group has officially opened the doors of its first “new look” SaveMor store in Limpopo, signalling a decisive move to confront one of South Africa’s most pressing challenges: the rising cost of living.

With household budgets under unprecedented pressure, SPAR’s revitalised SaveMor format is designed to deliver quality, everyday essentials at prices that hard-working South Africans can afford, while boosting local economic growth in rural and township communities.

Middle-income and lower-income households in South Africa are paying proportionally more for necessities than wealthier segments, with income growth lagging behind inflation and joblessness persisting. Rising living costs, compounded by the VAT increase and global instability are forcing many to make tough trade-offs.

SaveMor aims to ease this strain by offering a budget-friendly option without compromising acceptable quality. This is part of SPAR’s broader retail strategy, with SaveMor standing out as the hero of affordability, serving price-sensitive shoppers

Driving Local Growth

In rural communities, which account for nearly half of SPAR’s business, the SaveMor model also powers local economic upliftment. Approximately 90% of SPAR’s private-label products are sourced from local suppliers, creating opportunities for small businesses and farmers, and keeping money circulating within the regions SPAR serves.

“Going forward, we aim to increase private-label brand sales both in and outside SaveMor stores to serve our retailers and shoppers better,” says Ed von Gericke, The SPAR Group National Retail Operations Executive. “This is not just a retail strategy, it’s a socio-economic commitment.”

A Launch That Puts Shoppers First

The Limpopo store’s big launch weekend (30–31 August) is designed to celebrate customers and give them an early taste of the Makoya of Savings campaign, running Monday to Sunday. Highlights include:

  • Win a share of prizes to the value of R50 000.00 until the end of September
  • Instant prizes and merchandise giveaways.
  • Spin-and-win wheels and daily deal bundles on essentials like rice and household goods.
  • Ongoing text messages and Facebook promotions with weekly prizes to be won.

Momentum for the Future

SPAR’s SaveMor brand is already experiencing growth across Southern Africa, with plans to expand its presence significantly through more stand-alone stores in rural and township areas. This growth comes as SPAR streamlines its formats to make shopping simpler and more relevant for every market segment.

“Affordability should never mean sacrificing quality. With SaveMor, we’re proving that value, quality, and local empowerment can and must go hand in hand,” von Gericke concludes.
