Walmart’s first South African store opens this Saturday
Walmart is set to debut its first branded store in South Africa this week, officially opening its doors at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort on Saturday, 22 November.
Although the US retailer has been active in the country for more than a decade through Massmart — which includes Makro, Game, and Builders — this will be its first store carrying the Walmart name. The company initially bought a 51% stake in Massmart in 2010 and took full ownership in 2022, after which Massmart was delisted from the JSE.
Walmart confirmed in September 2025 that it would begin rolling out its own stores locally, following years of underperformance from some Massmart banners such as Game. In October, the group announced Clearwater Mall as the first location, with additional stores planned, including a confirmed site at Fourways Mall.
The new store will offer an extensive selection of products, ranging from fresh and frozen foods to household essentials, beauty items, clothing, baby products, electronics, toys, outdoor equipment, and seasonal goods. Walmart said the assortment reflects its intention to blend local sourcing with select international brands. Most items will come from South African suppliers, complemented by a curated range of global products.
Among the imported offerings is the Beautiful range — a lifestyle and home appliance line created by Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore. The collection features pastel-toned appliances such as air fryers, blenders, kettles, and toasters, which Walmart describes as combining “premium quality with elegant design.”
Merchandise vice president Mark Scott said the goal is to give shoppers both familiarity and a sense of discovery. “We wanted an assortment that surprises customers with new choices while still meeting their everyday needs,” he said.
The Clearwater Mall store will employ over 80 people and will be led by Store Manager Onicca Mothapo, who brings 20 years of industry experience. Mothapo said the opportunity is especially meaningful given her career journey.
“Starting out as a cashier, I never imagined I would one day manage the first Walmart store in Africa,” she said.
