Shoprite Group exceeds 2026 store rollout target

| Store Openings

While consumers continue to prioritise affordability and accessibility amid mounting pressure on household budgets, the Shoprite Group has surpassed its planned 2026 store rollout target, opening 268 new stores across its core Supermarkets RSA segment in the first 11 months of the financial year.

As previously reported, the Group had planned on opening 223 new stores during FY 2026 within Supermarkets RSA.

The accelerated store openings reflect a deliberate strategy to continue advancing the Group’s rapidly growing omnichannel retail platform – which leverages its corporate-owned store base – as a foundation for future growth.

In its core segment – which contribute the lion’s share of Group sales – the retailer opened 48 Usave, 41 Shoprite and 30 Checkers supermarkets as well as 92 LiquorShops over the 11 months.

While consumers continue to prioritise affordability and accessibility amid mounting pressure on household budgets, the Shoprite Group has surpassed its planned 2026 store rollout target, opening 268 new stores across its core Supermarkets RSA segment.

The adjacent businesses continue to gain momentum, with Petshop Science exceeding its planned rollout by 65%, opening 38 new stores against a target of 23, while UNIQ clothing by Checkers more than doubled its rollout, opening 13 stores versus five planned.

Thousands of new jobs were created throughout South Africa as the Group expanded its footprint across all nine provinces, led by Gauteng with 82 stores, followed by the Western Cape (48) and KwaZulu-Natal (31), which together accounted for nearly 60% of all openings during the period.

The Group’s expansion strategy is supported by significant capital investment, with R3.9 billion spent during the first half of its 2026 financial year – much of it directed towards growing and upgrading the retailer’s core South African store network.
