Les Mousquetaires
With a multi-brand project, these musketeers are now fighting, sword in hand, for affordable prices and for technical expertise, even outside the borders of France.
A French group, operating also in Portugal, Poland & Belgium
The Les Mousquetaires Group was founded in 1969, when European mass distribution was beginning to organise itself in order to offer breadth and depth of products (both in the food and non-food sectors) using self-service methods, low prices, modern systems, and operations under a single roof (above large spaces).
At that time, there was the decisive contribution of a ‘French School’ inspired by the opportunities of more demanding consumers, meticulously structured to meet the needs of the suburbs with branches, and driven by the ambition to expand, effectively, beyond national borders.
The ‘Specialised Distribution, the crisis of large retail outlets, the revaluation of ‘traditional shopping’, the greater effectiveness recognised by a specific knowledge of the territories served, the disorientation caused by vast sales spaces (increased by the pressing need to optimise time), the tendency to favour multiple purchases during the week (encouraged by free and, sometimes, ‘uncontrolled’ holiday openings) rather than cumbersome stockpiling of products (by now, out of use) encouraged by periodic promotions and, in the end, the extraordinary rise of discount stores, have subsequently emerged as ‘conditioning agents’ capable of subverting the usual pattern.
Thus, the top French mass market players have reorganised to avoid failures and limit dangerous regressions, sometimes abandoning their initial intentions. Among the most successful strategies now standing out, there’s that of compact within a well-cohesive entity, maintaining certain particular identities, renewing the attributes, and diversifying distribution formats according to functional perspectives. Such a consolidation of services under various Store Brands allows, in practice, each to represent exclusivity, to spread loyalty, to generate attractiveness of services, quality of proposals and convenience, within the valuable traits of a homogeneous and potentially successful business.
The Les Mousquetaires Group has effectively adopted this strategic course, reshaping the characteristic features of the historical ‘French School’. It brings together numerous independent retail chains (belonging to various sales sectors) that (many of the most important) share the curious fact of having ‘marché’ at the end of their names. Indeed, there are stores as Intermarché, Ecomarché, Restaumarché, Bricomarché, and Logimarché. Netto, operating in the important discount channel and distinguishable from the Danish (Netto by Salling Group) and German (Edeka Netto), is clearly an exception in terms of name similarities.

Key figures and characteristics
At the end of 2024, the brands incorporated into the Musketeers’ association grew by 6.4%, totalling €42.5 billion (excluding fuel). During the same period, the conversion of 273 stores previously acquired by Groupe Casino (also French) and placed under the Intermarché (211) and Netto (62) banners was also completed. However, the most representative brands are essentially four: Intermarché, Ecomarché, Netto, and Bicomarché.
They significantly impact both the resonance that Les Mousquetaires has with consumers and the overall level of prosperity that feeds the company’s overall business. Intermarché primarily sells food products in retail spaces between 2 000–2 500m2. Ecomarché focuses on the local market, with a particular emphasis on eco-sustainability and average sizes ranging between 400 and 800 square metres. Netto is the Group’s hard discount brand, with average sizes ranging from 300–650m2 and product assortments consisting of no more than 1 800 items.
Bricomarché, on the other hand, focuses on the non-food (DIY) sector, with sales areas ranging from 1 500–2 300m2. In essence, the Superstore, the Discount Store, the small Supermarket Nearby and the Medium Large Store dedicated to technical products are, essentially, the four points and colours around which this French group’s core business has been designed.
In the French food distribution sector, Inter marché and Netto brands boast a 17% market share. The recent strong push toward consumer acceptance of the two Store Brands has been driven by their daily image of convenience, bolstered by the “1 000 products against high prices” campaign, launched to combat inflation (2.3% in France in May 2024; then, at the beginning of 2025, it will be contained to around 1%).
International approach & future orientation In Poland, Intermarché (which also operates internationally) generates, excluding fuel, €1.2 billion, €1.9 billion in Portugal, and €1.9 billion in Belgium. Bricomarché, on the other hand, generates nearly €1 billion in Poland, while in Portugal it produces just over €200 million. Les Mousquetaires began 2025 with the active contribution of over 160 000 employees and the involvement of approximately 3 000 self-employed entrepreneurs. Remaining within the Group’s core business, Intermarché has 2 066 stores in France, 269 in Portugal, 185 in Poland, and 159 in Belgium. Netto has 386 stores, located exclusively in France.

Bricomarché has 472 locations in France, 61 in Portugal, and 213 in Poland. Thierry Cotillard, President of the Les Mousquetaires Group, during his public remarks on the last Annual Report, emphasised that the success achieved in the French food sector (growth of 0.9 points compared to the previous year, reaching a significant market share of 17%, with an increase of over 2 million new customers) was the result of the far-sighted work done on pricing to protect the purchasing power and long-term capacity of the various (experienced and well-trained) managers responsible for store operations.
The top executive also expressed his confidence that the emerging market conditions will allow the Les Mousquetaires Group to continue its winning strategy, focused on invulnerability in France and dynamism in Poland, Portugal, and Belgium.
