Over 115,000 bags of pet food recalled nationwide due to contamination concerns
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued a recall for several dry pet food products after potential health risks were identified.
According to NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba, the recall affects a range of dry dog and cat food products manufactured by RCL Foods.
The impacted items include specific batch numbers across multiple pack sizes of well-known brands such as Bobtail, Catmor, Canine Cuisine, Optimizor, Ultra Pet, Feline Cuisine, Bonzo and Optiwoof.
In total, approximately 115,045 cases (bags) are affected. The products were distributed through a variety of retail outlets across South Africa.
Ntaba said RCL Foods alerted the NCC after discovering that certain batches, which had been condemned due to a possible contamination risk, had entered retail supply chains.
The concern centres on the presence of Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause illness in both animals and humans. Exposure can occur either by consuming contaminated food or through handling infected products.
Because of the potential health risk, any presence of Salmonella in pet food is regarded as unsafe.
Consumers who have bought any of the affected products are urged to stop using them immediately. The NCC advises customers to return the items to the store where they were purchased in order to receive either a refund or a replacement.
The commission added that it is closely overseeing the recall process to ensure that it complies fully with the Consumer Protection Act and that consumer interests are protected.
