Clicks recalls Made for Tots Corn Puffs over Listeria contamination concerns

| Supplier news

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued a recall for a batch of Made for Tots Corn Puffs Chicken 12g sold through Clicks Group stores and its online platform.

The consumer regulator said the action follows testing that detected a form of Listeria bacteria in the product. According to Clicks, the recall involves just over 1,100 units from the affected batch.

The supplier indicated that the contamination involved a non-pathogenic strain of Listeria. While this type of bacteria is generally not harmful to people, there have been rare and isolated cases where it has been linked to illness in humans.

Consumers are advised to check their products for the following identifying details to determine whether they are part of the recall:

  • Identifying number: 396194
  • Manufacturing date (MGF):03.26
  • Lot number: 6:003
  • Best before:03.2027

The NCC said the products were distributed through Clicks outlets across South Africa and via the retailer’s online store, with some units also supplied to Lesotho.

Customers who purchased the affected corn puffs are urged not to eat them. Instead, they should return the items to any Clicks store to receive a full refund or replacement, even if they no longer have the receipt.

The commission said it is keeping a close watch on this and other recent product recalls to ensure companies comply with the requirements of the Consumer Protection Act.

Acting NCC Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu said the incident highlights the responsibility suppliers have to ensure the safety and quality of the products they sell.

Speaking as the world marks World Consumer Rights Day under the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumers,” Ratshisusu reminded suppliers that goods placed on the market must meet quality standards, be free of defects, and remain safe for use.

“When products fall short of these standards, they must be removed from sale to limit any possible risk to consumers,” he said.
