Woolworths reassures shoppers over Chuckles supply amid chocolatier concerns
Woolworths has moved to calm customer concerns, confirming that its range of chocolates—including the well-known Chuckles brand—remains available nationwide despite reports involving one of its suppliers.
Recent coverage by Financial Mail indicated that Beyers Chocolates has entered liquidation following a dispute with the retailer.
According to the report, tensions arose after Beyers Chocolates expanded its production facilities, which allegedly conflicted with an exclusivity arrangement it had with Woolworths. This development reportedly led the retailer to scale back its orders, contributing to the chocolatier’s financial difficulties and eventual move into liquidation.
Beyers Chocolates has long been a behind-the-scenes supplier for a wide range of confectionery products sold by major South African retailers, including Checkers and Pick n Pay, in addition to Woolworths.
While many consumers may not recognise the name, the company has produced chocolates enjoyed by South Africans for years. Its portfolio includes familiar products such as Sweetie Pie and Amarula-branded treats. It also manufactures a variety of private-label goods supplied to airlines and the hospitality sector.
The reported developments raised questions about the future availability of certain Woolworths products, particularly as Beyers Chocolates has been a supplier for several of the retailer’s confectionery lines, including Chuckles. The supplier has also produced chocolate using UTZ-certified cocoa for Woolworths, a standard the retailer has highlighted in its sustainability messaging.
Woolworths declined to comment on the specifics of its relationship with Beyers Chocolates, citing confidentiality. However, it emphasised that its chocolate products continue to meet the quality standards customers expect and remain widely stocked across the country.
The retailer did not provide detail on how the situation might influence its product range going forward or whether any items could be affected.
Founded in 1987 by Belgian-born chocolatier Kees Beyers, Beyers Chocolates also operates The Chocolate Factory in Bedfordview, Gauteng.
