Massive Checkers Sixty60 growth as Shoprite Group reports R240 billion in sales

The Shoprite Group has announced that the total sale of merchandise increased by 12% to around R240.7 billion from continuing operations.

This is according to Shoprite’s operational update for the year ended June 30, 2024.

The report showed that excluding hyperinflation sales of merchandise grew by 12% or R240.7 billion.

The Groups’s South African business achieved sales growth of 12.3% which contributed to 81% to Group sales. The growth is reported against the year prior in which sales rose by 17.8%.

Shoprite reported sales growth of 12.3% for Checkers and Checkers Hyper while online sales from the Checkers Sixty60 app grew by 58.1%.

Other brands from the Group that showed include Shoprite and Usave which experienced sales growth of 10.7% while sales from Checkers LiquorShop increased by 20%.

According to the report, Shoprite opened 201 stores during the year which takes the total number of stores to 2,322.

On the new openings 20 were Shoprite stores, 22 were Usave stores, 25 were Checkers stores and 71 were LiquorShop stores.

Adjacent category specialist stores make up the remaining 63 stores including:

– 33 new Petshop Science stores which takes the total number of stores to 86

– Checkers Outdoor added 14 new stores, this means that there are 22 stores in total

– 13 new UNIQ clothing by Checkers stores this take the total amount of stores to 22

– Little Me opened three new stores, this means that are 12 stores in total.

According to the report, sales for supermarkets outside SA increased by 6.1%, excluding hyperinflation and contributed 8.6% to Group sales.

There were also 15 new stores opened outside of SA. This means that there are 266 stores that operate in nine countries.

Shoprite’s furniture segment contributed 3% to the company’s sales, reporting a 2.3% increase in sales for the year.

While sales grew for the year, the store based for the furniture segment decreased by four which takes the total store base to 430 stores for the year-end.

Other operating segments operating segments for the company also showed growth. The other operating segment comprises of OK Franchise, Transpharm, Medirite, Red Star Wholesale Catering Services and Computicket.

This segment reported 21.1% growth in sales for the period. This represents7.4%of Group sales

The OK Franchise business grew by 23.8% while the segment opened 73 stores while franchise ended the year with the 608 stores.

Shoprite opened seven Medirite Plus standalone drug stores during the period to end the year with 13 stores in this new format. This number excludes the 126 Medirite in-store pharmacies located within SA shops.
