Retailers respond as loyalty uptake grows - Pick n Pay launches initiative to double down on customer value

| News

As South African households continue to face rising living costs and make more intentional spending choices, retailers are urged to deliver meaningful value.

Pick n Pay’s Price Palooza campaign supports this notion, reinforcing how loyalty programmes are helping customers stretch their budgets through discounts, rewards, and a little excitement at the till.

The campaign aligns with recent data showing growing consumer reliance on value-driven solutions. According to the latest FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index, sentiment has climbed from a near two-year low of -20 to -10 in Q2 2025. Yet, the economic reality remains tough. In response, more South Africans are embracing reward schemes, with a recent Truth Loyalty white paper noting that 82% now make use of loyalty programmes - up from 76% in 2023.

“South Africans are seeking better value than ever before. They want to save now, while also building up rewards they can use later,” says Vincent Viviers, Head of Innovation & Digital Transformation at Pick n Pay. “These evolving shopping habits directly inspired our Smart Shopper Price Palooza campaign,” says Viviers. “It’s designed to deliver immediate relief, while making the shopping experience more rewarding and engaging.”

Running until 7 September, the ‘Smart Shopper Price Palooza’ campaign will provide loyalty programme customers with financial relief through daily instant savings and double Smart Shopper points on featured products. On top of these great deals, Pick n Pay shoppers also stand a chance to win R100,000 prize every day.

The initiative reflects Pick n Pay’s customer-first approach; using real-time customer data to adapt quickly to changing needs and promote a culture of saving. “We know that the average South African is under more pressure than ever,” says Viviers. “Smart Shopper is still the only major grocery loyalty programme that offers customers both instant deals at the till and points that convert into cash. It’s a powerful combination that helps them feel more in control of their budgets.”

Due to the dual impact of instant savings and Smart Shopper points, Pick n Pay’s loyalty programme remains one of South Africa’s most popular.

“As we continue to innovate around our customers' needs, Pick n Pay remains committed to delivering real value and quality through Smart Shopper. We’re proud to help South Africans shop smarter, save more, and feel rewarded every time they walk through our doors or tap tap the all new Pick n Pay asap!”
