Checkers Hyper opens first Nespresso shop-in-shop

| News

In a grocery retail first for South Africa, Checkers Hyper has opened a Nespresso shop‑in‑shop at its Centurion Mall store in Tshwane, bringing a specialist, premium coffee experience into a supermarket environment.

Coffee is firmly embedded in South Africans’ daily routines, with 22.7 million people drinking coffee every day. The category recorded 15% year‑on‑year growth in 2025 and is expected to grow at close to 12% a year until 2029 as more consumers – especially younger, urban shoppers – choose premium, convenient formats such as capsules and pods for at‑home use.

The new Nespresso shop-in-shop at Checkers Hyper offers customers a dedicated space to explore the 40-year-old global coffee brand's exclusive range of coffee blends, machines and accessories, combining specialist expertise with the convenience of a grocery shop.

Nespresso pods are also available for delivery in just 60 minutes via Checkers Sixty60 (from select locations in Cape Town and Johannesburg) and a second Nespresso shop-in-shop is set to open at the Checkers Hyper Paarl Junction in the Western Cape next month.

"Understanding and catering to evolving customer preferences is key to our offering," explains Willem Hunlun, COO of Checkers. "As our customers look to recreate café experiences at home, our partnership with Nespresso enables us to meet that demand by making premium coffee more accessible, discoverable and convenient within a grocery setting.”

“Expanding accessibility is one of the key levers to unlock the full potential of the coffee capsules category. Through our partnership with Checkers, we are accelerating this ambition with a true omnichannel approach — ensuring availability both online and in select Checkers stores bringing the Nespresso Coffee Experience directly to consumers where they are," says Gabriel Nobre, CEO of Nespresso South Africa. "This allows us to reach more consumers, more conveniently, while maintaining the high-quality experience that defines Nespresso."
