Pick n Pay notifies customers of delivery app data breach

Pick n Pay has revealed that customer information linked to its delivery platform was exposed in a data breach affecting users who signed up for the service on or before 2022.

In a notice sent to customers, the retailer explained that the compromised information relates to an earlier version of its on-demand shopping platform, previously branded as Bottles and later renamed Pick n Pay asap!, before being replaced by a newer system.

According to the retailer, the exposed data may include customer names, contact information, residential addresses and certain banking details.

“The affected information originates from a previous version of our on-demand application,” the company said in its communication to users. It added that the records involved date back to 2022 and were only recently discovered online.

Pick n Pay stressed that complete payment card numbers and CVV security codes were not stored on the affected system and therefore were not part of the breach.

The retailer said this means the leaked information cannot be used to carry out direct fraudulent transactions using customers’ bank cards.

Customers have been advised to update their passwords and remain alert to suspicious emails, phone calls or text messages from individuals who may reference personal information to appear legitimate.

Pick n Pay said it has appointed an independent cybersecurity specialist to conduct a full investigation into the incident.

The company also indicated that it plans to strengthen its management and storage of historical customer information and has established a dedicated support channel for affected users.
