R200 banknotes in South Africa – which ones you can and cannot use

The Alberton Record recently reported that R200 notes which were dispensed by an ATM were not accepted as legal tender at local retail stores.
The reason for the rejection was that they were old and had been withdrawn from circulation by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).
MyBroadband contacted the SARB to gain insight into which R200 notes are accepted as legal tender and which ones are not.
The current situation is simple: Only R200 banknotes issued before 2005 were withdrawn from circulation and are no longer accepted.
The SARB withdrew these R200 notes from circulation in 2010 and they should not be issued by banks or ATMs.
Should anyone be in possession of R200 notes issued before 2005, they can be exchanged at any SARB branch.
“All R200 banknotes that were issued after 2005 remain legal tender and continue to co-circulate with the Mandela banknote series. Business is obliged to accept them,” said the SARB.
