With tax season now in full swing, SARS has issued a notice that it has accidentally omitted information submitted by certain taxpayers and companies.

According to a report by Beeld, the issue affected the annual reconciliation statement (EMP 501) and IRP 5s, with certain companies and individuals now required to resubmit their information.

In a statement, SARS said that the group of taxpayers who are affected as those with income codes 3701 (travel subsidy), 3816 (right to use a motor vehicle) and 3816 (another travel-related code).

“This resulted in IRP5/IT3(a) certificates containing codes 3701, 3702, 3802 and/or 3816 but omitting code 4582 and its value being received by SARS,” it said.

“As a result, code 4582 and its value were not pre-populated on employees’ Personal Income Tax Returns (ITR12s). This omission may impact the calculation of the maximum allowable deduction in respect of retirement fund contributions.”

According to Beeld, SARS has begun contacting affected employers about the error and has asked them to submit the necessary documents to SARS as soon as possible, to prevent employees from filling in incorrect information.

It also noted that employers should inform those employees affected.
