Turning the Egg Challenge on its head
South Africa’s Good Things Guy, Brent Lindeque has turned the latest social media challenge on its head through a partnership with SPAR, already raising over R1,1 million, to help feed South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens.
The current Egg Challenge doing the rounds on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter calls on a person to swallow a raw egg, followed by a mouthful of sugar and then ending it off with a shot of brandy or rum. The person then goes on to challenge a friend to do the same.
“As far as viral challenges go, this one has got a lot of airtime, all for the wrong reasons I think,” says Brent. “Right now, there are millions of South Africans who are going to bed hungry, but we have the ability to help them by throwing out a challenge of a different kind.”
One of the biggest retailers in the country, SPAR, has come on board and joined the Good Things Guy, placing a shopping trolley outside of every SPAR store for consumers to donate a six-pack of eggs, one kilogram of maize and one litre of milk to the most vulnerable of South Africans. The retailer will also match every contribution by sending R1 from every donation to the SPAR Lodestar foundation feeding scheme.
Together, Good Things Guy and SPAR have launched a Backabuddy fund for anyone who would like to donate funds to help feed South Africa with the SPAR family already raising over R1,1 million in just the first 48 hours to help feed South Africa!
Bedfordview SPAR and TOPS were the first to pledge R1 million in food parcels to the cause with many other stores following suit with donations.
“I completely understand that everyone is having a tough time at the moment, but there are always people worse off than most. The challenge to every able citizen is to turn their #EggChallenge into a #SPARdonate challenge or if you’d prefer to make a difference from your home, donate through the BackaBuddy fund at https://www.backabuddy.co.za/the-egg-challenge,” says Brent.
“Rather tag and challenge friends with the #SPARdonate hashtag, this is how we change the world… together. Wishing you only good things, and no more raw eggs!”
