Woolworths has introduced K9 units at stores across South Africa as part of strengthened security measures following recent incidents involving explosive devices at two of its outlets.

In the early hours of the morning on both Thursday (28 May) and Friday (29 May), improvised explosive devices were detonated in Woolworths stores. The first occurred in Pretoria, at the Menlyn Park store and the second in Bloemfontein at the Preller Square branch. While the Woolworths Menlyn Park store has reopened, Woolworths Preller Square remains closed while the investigation is underway.

Authorities are investigating possible structural and property damage after an explosion struck a Woolworths food outlet at a shopping centre in Bloemfontein.

An explosive device detonated inside the Woolworths store at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre in Pretoria early on Thursday morning, triggering a major police response and an investigation by the SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit.
