Eggs galore being transported by Serco-built vehicles

Lighter, leaner, more fuel efficient and able to carry the highest possible payloads are features many customers look for when buying a truck or trailer in today’s performance conscious world.

Midlands Eggs was looking for two vehicles boasting all those features and Serco was able to give them what they wanted in the form of the company’s 3,8m-long lightweight dry freight rigid trucks.

Midlands Eggs, founded in 2011 as a humble egg packing facility run by two KwaZulu-Natal egg farmers, has grown exponentially to become a trusted household brand in KZN with supplies provided by seven local egg producers.

The company now collects, grades, packs and distributes 320 000 eggs a day!

Many of the staff who began the journey with the company back in 2011 are still part of the team today. As Midlands have grown, so has their team but they remain a family run business that puts a high value on loyalty, hard work and a good dose of humour to get them through busy month ends and festive season rushes.

Midlands Eggs has a long-standing business relationship with Serco and like others in the industry they were on the lookout for a lighter vehicle with optimum payload capacity and a sub frame and door frame that would not rust.

Serco had the knowledge and skills to build the two trucks according to the customer’s specifications which basically required having the capacity to load an increased number of crates of eggs in an ultra-lightweight body.

“We opted for a fully galvanised sub frame and door assembly to give extended service life and ensure that the trucks continue to look great many years down the line,” said Ross.

Both trucks have been delivered and have clocked more than 20 000km each already. “I am very happy with them. They look great and are built to last. I must say team Serco gives us excellent service and we have had good results with their products,” he said.

“We have dealt with Serco for about ten years and for the past six or seven of those we have used Serco exclusively to build our truck bodies - all of which have held up very well. Rust is a challenge for us as we deliver to the coast which is why we decided to go with fully galvanised sub frames on our most recent units.”

Ross identified Serco’s stand-out features as its service levels and innovation. “They have really looked after us over the years, investing a lot of time in finding the right vehicles for our applications and working closely with us to design bodies that help us to achieve our goals. From an innovation perspective, they can accommodate our needs from fully insulated bodies to bespoke lightweight dry freight bodies depending on the application.

“We will soon need to replace some of our vehicles and look forward to working with Serco on these units,’’ he added.
