Shoprite-supported NPO serves 3000 meals daily following donation

| Social Responsibility

A donation of a new industrial cooking pot, valued at R40,000, means The Ark City of Refuge in Faure, Cape Town, can continue preparing approximately 3,000 nutritious daily meals for vulnerable individuals in their fight against hunger.

“The need for food assistance in the community remains high, and when our old pot started acting up, we were faced with a major challenge. Now, because of Shoprite’s continued assistance, we can remain unwavering in our commitment to ensuring that no one in the community goes hungry,” says Pastor Jack Mahoney from The Ark, which provides a temporary home to destitute men, women and children.

Shoprite has been supporting The Ark since its inception in 1992, including through regular donations of surplus food as well as an investment into its community food garden, which is used to supplement the organisation’s feeding programme.

“Our surplus food donations to more than 540 beneficiary organisations, including The Ark, ensured 67 million meals were served to people facing food insecurity during the last year. Through our Act For Change programme, we run an extensive hunger relief programme across South Africa, which includes long-term support to more than 220 food gardens,” says Sanjeev Raghubir, Head of Sustainability and CSI at the Shoprite Group.
