SA’s oldest liquor store now trading as Checkers LiquorShop Van der Stel
The oldest liquor store in South Africa - which has been trading from 30 Andringa Street, Stellenbosch since 1891 - will from today continue its legacy as the Checkers LiquorShop Van der Stel.
The 127-year old store first started trading as the Van Backström Wine Merchant. In 1899, the building and business was sold to Daniel Ferdinand Bosman and George Trigance Powis who traded as Bosman, Powis and Comp. before it became known as the Van der Stel Bottle Store.
It was declared a provincial heritage site in 1986 and Checkers LiquorShop is committed to conserving the building’s historical features.
About the new store:
· Checkers Liquorshop van der Stel’s product range will include local and international wines, a wide selection of commercial as well as craft beers, ready-to-drink cocktails, a selection of the finest local and international whiskies, and more.
· The store’s trading hours are 09:00 – 19:00 from Mondays to Fridays, 09:00 - 17:00 on Saturdays and 09:00 - 14:00 on Sundays.
