Shoprite created 208 new jobs with the opening of four new supermarkets in Gauteng, all on the same day.

The new Shoprite stores are:

  • Shoprite Hebron Mall in Pretoria which created 38 new jobs. The supermarket will be managed by Sphiwe Mabena who joined the retailer as a Trainee Manager in 2017.
  • Shoprite Mamelodi, situated at the newly built Mamelodi Square, created jobs for 80 new employees. Kgobuki Hajane, who started as a Trainee Manager in 2013, is the Branch Manager.
  • Shoprite Cosmo Mall, at the newly built Cosmo Mall, created jobs for 40 new employees. The store will be managed by Constance Goodgall who joined the retailer as a Trainee Manager in 2006.
  • Shoprite Elsburg in Germiston created jobs for 50 new employees. Tshifhiwa Mashamba, who joined the retailer as a Trainee Manager in 2014, is the Branch Manager.

These new stores offer customers a convenient shopping experience and access to several in-store fresh food departments including a Meat Market, Hot & Cold Foods Deli, Bakery, Fresh Fruit and Vegetables and in-store Money Market counters.

With more than 145 000 employees, the Shoprite Group is South Africa’s largest private sector employer – a trend which is set to continue as it plans to open 275 new stores in 2023.

The Group specifically targets areas that have previously been underrepresented, and in doing so, will create new job opportunities for the surrounding communities. Physical area visits are conducted before opening stores, to directly inform which store to open under which of the Group’s various pillars.
