Clicks and Shell scrap their rewards deal - and ClubCard members are hurting

| Supplier news

Clicks ClubCard members won’t receive points from buying fuel at Shell Service stations from the end of the month.

Clicks chief commercial officer, Rachel Wrigglesworth, told Business Insider South Africa that the partnership has ended, and members were also informed via SMS this week.

Clicks ClubCard members received one Rewards point (equal to 10c) for every litre of fuel they bought at a Shell garage – and on Wednesdays they received two points.

But the rewards deal will now come to an end on 30 November, and members expressed their unhappiness on social media:

Guys Clicks club card points are the only ones that matter and they're pulling out of their deal with Shell 💔

That's how we get most of our points.

"We are aware of the recent social media reaction to this announcement, which shows that South Africans really love their ClubCard and the great rewards it offers. We are continually innovating and improving our loyalty offering, which includes reviewing our affinity partnerships from time to time," said Wrigglesworth.

No reason was given for the decision to end the rewards programme, and Clicks said that "no further comment will be provided".

More than eight million people are now Clicks ClubCard members, and the cards are swiped with almost 80% of all Clicks sales. In the year to end-August, members were paid R504 million in cashback rewards.

Clicks also has rewards deals with NetFlorist, Sorbet, SpecSavers, Europcar and Musica.
