Woolworths unveils premium wine in a box – and it’s actually something you’ll want to drink

| Supplier news

Major retailer Woolworths has just launched a range of premium local wines – in boxes. If you’re thinking that this is just plain old papsak, think again. The boxes are boldly branded with the respective estates; the contents exactly the same as in regular branded bottles.

Woolworths is keen to rebound after a crushing alcohol ban of 14 weeks left its wine suppliers floundering. In the wake of lockdown, the wine team has come up with an ingenious solution: premium large-format wine that you’ll actually want to drink – offering the value South African shoppers are looking for now more than ever. The new range of boxes come in 2L slim boxes that easily sits in the fridge door, and the pricing is very reasonable and structured – effectively the consumer gets 500ml wine free.

As for taste? Every precaution has been taken so it isn’t influenced. The inner packaging (the sak, if you will) doesn’t impart any flavour into the wine. The plastic tap keeps air out; the carboard keeps light out; and without any possible taint from a natural cork stopper, box wine may in fact be a superior product all around.

We found some in store (it’s also listed online) with staff indicating that the boxes should be available countrywide soon.

We had a taste

We struggled a bit with the cardboard access flap, but once the black plastic tap is revealed, it’s smooth sailing. (Perhaps a bit too easy, with some of us very quickly losing track of how much had been consumed – we’re looking at you, Brenda.)

We compared the boxed version to the standard glass version and found no discernible taste or quality difference. In this case, what you get is exactly as it says on the box. And if you can’t imagine the shame of lugging a dooswyn to the next socially-distanced gathering, be reassured that the sleek packaging is very chic, making for the perfect picnic accessory.

A bottle of Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc 2020 in glass (750ml) is sold at R62.99, while the boxed version (2L) will only cost R124.99.  This chenin is packed with apricots, peaches and pineapple, with a nice acidity, and finishes dry.

We also tasted the Pierre Jourdan Tranquille Blush (R129.99 for 2L) by Haute Cabrière in Franschhoek, which is a zesty rosé perfect for summer afternoons.

The Diemersdal sauvignon blanc (R159.99) is a cracking white wine, with lemony cleanness and a smooth finish that will please sauv fans.

For the red wine lovers, the Beyerskloof pinotage is on offer – possibly one of SA’s most-loved wines. The structure of this wine comes through beautifully and, at R189.99 per box, it’s sure to become a regular feature at braais this summer.

The range of boxed wines is available in Woolworths stores countrywide and online from this week, limited to government trading hours. Wine is not for sale to those under the age of 18.
