South African best wines in 2016

| Wine and liquor

The South African Wine Index (SAwi) has announced the winners of its annual Grand Wines Collection awards for 2016, naming the best wines in South Africa.

The SAWi compares and condenses results from 84 multinational competitions, reviews and listings, and acknowledges the nature of the competition and additional accolades bestowed on a wine, expressing all the data as a single number out of 100.

Using a score of 93 as the benchmark, wines scoring above that are considered part of the “Grand Wines Collection”.

The 2016 list is sourced from 585 wineries and more than 6000 wines. The ‘Grand Wines Collection’ currently includes 494 wines, with 203 wines, representing 66 wineries, achieving platinum status.

“This year, KWV took the most honours with 11 awards, followed by Cederberg’s and Spier’s 8, Saronsberg 7, while Bouchard Finlayson, Paul Cluver and Diemersdal received 6 awards each,” SAwi said.

“As with a golf or tennis rating system, having received the most accolades does not necessarily imply a number 1 ranking position, but such performances take these wineries close to being coveted trophy winners.”

The table below shows which are the best wines in the country in every category assessed by SAwi.
