Makro makes history: Tallest trolley stacked in SA

| Awards and achievements

Inspired by the iconic Makro Mood TV commercial, on Leap Day at the Centurion store, Makro partnered with renowned magician Wian van den Berg to stack the tallest trolley in SA in 3 hours, 6 minutes, and 6 seconds.

The event, which went live at 1pm on 29 February, was streamed live via Makro’s Facebook channel for those customers not able to join in-store. Customers will stand a chance to win a R4000 voucher if they can guess how many products were used to fill up the stacked trolley. To enter, shoppers will need to tune in to the Facebook LIVE stream, share their answers in the comments section and the winner will be selected and announced after the experience!

“Remaining relevant as a retailer in 2024 requires creativity in the way you reach your customers with your propositions, the trolley reached 5.1-meters in height which equated to 284 (two hundred and eighty-four) products stacked – this was a first-ever in South Africa,” says Katherine Madley, Vice President Group Marketing at Massmart.

“We had a lot of social media engagement with over 700 entry comments on Facebook. This is an example of celebrating the abundance that Makro offers the customer and gives our customers a chance to join in on the fun.”

Customers were treated to in-store entertainment, great limited-time deals, some leap day magic with Wian van den Berg as he entertained with a few aces up his sleeve, and an opportunity to witness the tallest trolley stack as it happened.

Madley concludes: “Makro is iconic among South African shoppers for our bulk deals, and now for having the country’s cheapest grocery basket. It is the place to shop if you are in the mood to stack your trolley with any product – be it groceries, appliances, or outdoor and camping products.

“We would like to thank our customers for participating online and instore, our Makro Centurion store for allowing us to see this vision out at their premises, our supplier partners Easy Agency, Wian van den Berg, R.M Photography and our influential partners for collaborating to bring this vision to life.”
